How to Test an Ultrasonic Cleaner—and Read the Result

Choose the question before choosing a test. An activity check asks whether ultrasound is affecting the bath under specified conditions. A cleaning test asks whether a defined contamination was removed. Neither alone proves that an unfamiliar object is clean or safe to use.

Use a test supported for the model

Ask the cleaner manufacturer which activity check it supports and obtain the full preparation and cleanup instructions. Grant's guidance for its baths is useful evidence about a method, but it is not permission to place foil or unfamiliar test material into every household cleaner.

Visible bubbles and noise are not substitutes for that check. Magnasonic describes cavitation bubbles as microscopic, so an absence of large bubbles does not establish a fault.

What the foil test can show

Grant describes suspending foil at several locations without touching the tank base, exposing it for roughly a minute, and looking for an even distribution of perforations. Use the timing and arrangement approved by your own machine's manufacturer.

The result shows how the foil was affected in that bath. More holes do not translate into a percentage of cleaning power, and heavily torn foil does not identify the best cleaner. A comparison between machines needs equivalent, controlled test conditions.

Make a later result comparable

Record the model, mode, fill level, preparation, liquid, test position and exposure time. Photograph the material consistently. If the next result differs, check those conditions before attributing the change to the machine.

Changing several settings at once makes that comparison difficult. Send the recorded procedure and result to support when an approved check fails or becomes inconsistent. Stop without further testing if the unit shows physical damage or an electrical fault.

Soil strips and energy meters have different purposes

Grant also identifies prepared soil test strips and ultrasonic energy meters. A soil strip examines removal of a defined test contamination; a meter measures activity under its measurement conditions. Use the appropriate procedure and acceptance criteria for each.

Passing a strip does not prove that every recess of a different load has been cleaned. An activity test also does not establish material compatibility or sterilization. If machine activity checks out but the object stays dirty, investigate the load and cleaning process rather than treating the activity result as proof that the job is finished.
